PE and Sport Strategy for Young People

Back in 2001 The Youth Sport Trust in partnership with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) launched the delivery of the PE & Sport Strategy for Young People.

The overall aim of the PE & Sport Strategy is to enhance the take-up of sporting opportunities by 5 to 19 year olds.

The aim was for 85% of children to have access to two hours per week of high quality PE and school sport by 2008.  Remarkably, this target was achieved a year early, as the 2007 School Sport Survey found that 86% of young people were taking part in a minimum of two hours per week.

Now the ambition is for each child to have access to five hours a week by 2012. This should be made up of two hours of physical education within the curriculum and three hours offered on school sites or in the community.

A Guide to Delivering the Five Hour Offer

PE & Sport Strategy in action

The PE & Sport Strategy has key strands, each designed to maximise opportunities for young people to access high quality PE and school sport.

As part of the strategy, the Youth Sport Trust works in partnership with the DCSF and DCMS to support the development of Specialist Sports Colleges and School Sport Partnerships.

There are currently 449 School Sport Partnerships (SSP) whose purpose it is to support and encourage all schools to deliver inclusive, High Quality PE and School Sport to 100% of children.

As the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games draw closer, our aims to transform Physcial Education (PE) and Sport through the creation of a world system are increasing. It is an ambition which lies at the heart of the legacy aims of the London Games. The linked video clip describes how we are going to achieve this aim through giving every young person in England access to 5 hours a week of high quality PE and sport. It also explains what the 5 hour offer to young people consists of.

Annual PESSCL Survey

To measure the effectiveness of each SSP, in meeting the outcomes of the PE and Sport Strategy each school is required to complete an annual 'PESSCL Survey'.

The data collected from the PESSCL Survey is used to report on the status of PE and School Sport and also to issue 'Sports Partnership Mark' and 'Sports Mark'  & ‘Active Mark’ status to schools meeting the criteria set. (See Active/Sports Mark)
