Partnership
Introduced in 2001, the School Sport Co-ordinator programme (SSCo) initiative was a joint national programme developed and implemented by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), the New Opportunities Fund (NOF), Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust.
Through the PE, School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL) strategy, the government has ensured that School Sport Partnerships (SSP) are now an integral part of every LEA and school’s PE and school sport strategy. There are now over 450 partnerships with 3,200 SSCo’s in secondary schools and 18,000 primary or special school link teachers. This includes every maintained school in England.
School sport partnerships are families of schools that come together to enhance sports opportunities for all. A Sports College will generally be at the hub of the partnership and be given funding to employ a core team including a full time Partnership Development Manager (PDM), who is responsible for the strategic development of the partnership and liaison with other agencies.
In North Wealden we also have a part time Assistant PDM, Competition Manager and Multi Skills Coach.
There are 5 secondary schools in total in North Wealden, each with one or two School Sport Co-ordinator’s (SSCo), an existing teacher that is released from the teaching timetable for a number of days per week, who is responsible for the co-ordination and development of school sport in their own school and family of primary / special schools.
Each of the secondary schools has a family cluster of primary and special schools that have a Primary Link Teacher (PLT), who is an existing teacher that is released from teaching for up to 12 days per year. The PLT is responsible for the development and delivery of high quality PE and sport in their own school.
The North Wealden Partnership is a large rural partnership that is located in the northern reaches of East Sussex, and spans approximately 30 square miles from Forest Row on the West Sussex borders, to Wadhurst on the Kent borders, and south to Ditchling on the Brighton & Hove unitary authority boundary.
The Partnership has 47 primary schools and 2 schools for pupils with special educational needs. They are served by the 5 secondary schools. Beacon Community College which has designated specialist Sports College status and is the hub of the Partnership; Chailey School is a specialist Language College; Heathfield Community College has Arts as its’ specialism, whilst Uckfield Community Technology College and Uplands Community College both have Technology as their designated specialism. This potentially presents innovative multi-specialist opportunities across the Partnership.
