Competition
Competition has of course always existed in school sport, between schools (inter school) and in schools (intra school). Traditional tournaments have been delivered in Primary and Secondary schools through various associations such as the Crowborough and Wadhurst Association, Heathfield & Waldron Association, Small Schools Association and the Ouse Valley Secondary Schools Association. These involve some of the more traditional sports such as Netball, Football and Rounders.
Through the development of Sports Colleges and subsequently School Sports Partnerships, SSCo’s have led events and introduced more events and festivals in their respective areas.
September 2005 saw the introduction of the Competition Manager Scheme through the Youth Sport Trust. The initial pilot phase rolled out 20 Competition Managers, 3 in East Sussex, one per School Sport Partnership.
Andy Wright took up the North Wealden Competition Manager post and the first phase of the programme was geared towards meeting the Government Public Service Agreement (PSA) Targets. The main aims were;
- To contribute to the PESSCL target by improving the quality and quantity of school competitions for young people aged between 5-16.
- To increase the range of sports available to a young person through a competitive experience.
- To increase the number of young people competing in schools competitions.
In the 3 years of the initial programme inter school competition was increased from 35% to 46% across all Key stages. Over 5,000 5-16 year olds are involved in inter school competition across a wide range of sporting events.
The success of the pilot phase led the Youth Sport Trust to roll out the programme nationally, ensuring that all School Sports Partnerships had coverage with the Competition Manager Programme. From April 2008 the North Wealden Partnership now shares the Competition Manager Programme with the Mid Sussex School Sport Partnership.
